چکیده

Significant amount of corrosion damage was revealed during recent complete inspections of airplane structures after years of service. The corrosion damage was located inside airplane’s hull and remained undetected until reaching hull’s outer surface. Therefore a demand for means of timely detection and non-destructive evaluation of corrosion damage arose. This work investigates the possibilities of monitoring on-going corrosion process by acoustic emission (AE) and of determining overall corrosion damage by the nonlinear wave modulation spectroscopy method (NWMS). Specimens made of Al-alloy L-beams simulating stringer reinforcements of airplane structure were studied. The samples were repeatedly immersed in sea salt solution. The acoustic emission activity was recorded in situ during corrosion process. Nonlinear parameters of the samples were measured in between corrosion tests by NWMS method. The current dynamics of a corrosion process was determined by AE, the amount of corrosion damage was corresponding to the nonlinear parameters obtained by NWMS. Since both methods can use the same type of piezoelectric transducers, they form a convenient part of a structure health monitoring system.

NANO- SCALE LOCALIZED CORROSION STUDIES OFEN AW- 3003ALALLOYBYSEM-EDS, SKPFM AND IN-SITU AFM

Abstract: Localized corrosion of aluminum alloys is often triggered by intermetallic particles, IMP’s. To understandthe role of IMP’s in corrosion initiation of EN AW-3003, efforts were made to combine nano-scale ex-situ analysis ofthe IMP’s by SEM-EDS, SKPFM and in-situ AFM monitoring of the localized attack in chloride containing solution. The results showed that two distinct types of eutectic...

Active Sensor Wave Propagation Health Monitoring of Beam and Plate Structures

Active sensor wave propagation technique is a relatively new method for in-situ nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Elastic waves propagating in material carry the information of defects. These information can be extracted by analyzing the signals picked up by active sensors. Due to the physical property of wave propagation, large area can be interrogated by a few transducers. This simplifies the ...

In-situ Corrosion Damage Detector Using Acoustic Emission

This paper aims to present the newly designed acoustic emission AE instrument for the in-situ monitoring of corrosion damages of aircraft structures. The work was theoretically based on the combination of modal AE theory and AE parameter analysis technique. Previous research had shown that identification of corrosion AE and background noise by modal acoustic emission(MAE) technique was possible...

Damage Assessment in Railway Sub-structures Deteriorated Using Ae Technique

Due to earthquakes, differential settlement and long-term weathering, civil structures have sustained deterioration. In super-structures located above ground, except for seriously damaged structures, evaluation of moderately or intermediately damaged structures is difficult. In sub-structures the damage would not be readily assessed even for severely damaged structures. AE testing has a potenti...

On the Use of Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation for Welded Joints Damage Characterization

A series of tests have been conducted to investigate fatigue damage characterization in corroded welded steel plates using structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique with potential applications for locating and monitoring fatigue cracks in service. In the present work, AE is implemented to characterize damage during crack e...
